Zanskar Lahaul Via Gontuntu La Trek Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive at Delhi and drive to Chandigarh

If possible try to arrive in Delhi in the first half of the day and from Delhi we will drive to Chandigarh which will take 4-5 hrs. Stay in a Hotel.

Day 02: Drive to Manali from Chandigarh

In the morning we will start our journey to Manali. Drive will take 7-8 hrs.Stay in Hotel.

Day 03: Drive to Keylong (3-4hrs)

Overnight stay in Kardang Village.Explore the village and the surroundings. Stay in Guest house

Day 04 & 05 : Acclimatization hike(around 4000m and above)

Day 06: Drive to Purne (3700m) (5-6hrs)

Drive over Sinnku La(5100mts) into Zanskar. You will witness the amazing transformation in the landscape. Drive through many villages along Kargiatk Chu stream,finally get to Purne,a small hamlet on top of a hill. With three to four houses,belonging to the same family. And below there is a confluence point of Kargiak Chu and Sarap Chu ( Chu in local language means river or water) which becomes Tsarap Chu or Zanskar River and would accompany us throughout our Journey in Zanskar.

 

Day 07: Trek from Purne To Phuktal - (2-3hrs)

A two hour walk on a rocky path takes us to the famous Phuktal Monastery. Phuktal Monastery is unmatched in its sublime grandeur. The monastery has been etched out of a mountain and has a massive cave. Inside the cave there is a water hole,whose water remains constantly at the same level. One should not forget to take torch to view magnificent old paintings and thangkas in the dark rooms of the monastery. Camp at Phuktal,after passing through the monastery.

Day 08 : Trek from Phuktal to Tantak (4000m) 6-7hrs

Today’s walk is along the Tsarap Chu,track is narrow adn cliffy at some stretches and needs attention. A stream crossing is involved just before the camp. Tantak has a small Monastery and few houses (5-6). Camp at the riverside.

Day 9: Rest Day at Tantak and excursion Shade village

Day 10: Trek from Tantak to Yarshun (8-9hrs) via Gontuntu La

We leave the camp and a gradual ascent of 300mts to Niyalo Khontse la.The pass provides spectacular views,including the valley of Shade,Gotuntu la to the  South . The last stretch is a steep descent for 1-1.5hrs and the trail enters a narrow gorge for around 1/2hrs to reacht eh camp at Yarshun-Marshun ground.

Day 11: Trek from Yarshun to Stok (4030m) (5-6 hrs)

Today’s trail is easy and flat through the grazing grounds for cattel’s. One must cross Zara Chu stream on the way. Satok campsite is set amidst the meadows.

Day 12: Trek from Satok to Tsokmetsik (4100m) (8-9hrs)

We will reach Tso metskik after crossing may small passes

Day 13: Trek to Gian (Near Gata Loop - Manali Leh Highway)

Today we trek for 3-4 hrs to Gian and then will drive to Leh.Stay in hotel

Day 14 : Rest or Local sightseeing around Leh

Stay in Hotel

Day 15 : Fly Leh to Delhi

  • After the trek concludes at Gian, trekkers have the option to continue their journey either to Manali or Leh. The itinerary includes a visit to Leh after the trek, as it offers a perfect opportunity to explore this vibrant and culturally rich destination. Visiting Leh post-trek allows you to unwind while experiencing its unique charm, stunning landscapes, and fascinating heritage.
  • We recommend booking your Leh-to-Delhi flight in advance, prior to the start of the trek, to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey after the trek concludes.
  • We kindly request you to bring your own sleeping bag for the trek to ensure your comfort and hygiene throughout the journey.
  • If possible, kindly plan to arrive in Delhi before noon to ensure we can reach Chandigarh comfortably and on time.
